The Almohads tore down an Almoravid mosque to put up the impressive Koutoubia mosque in around 1150. The minaret is built in the ratio of 1:5 width to height, with
pyramid-shaped castellated battlements, a wide collar of ceramic inlay and alternating designs on its faces. Its pattern of lobed arches can be seen on many Almohad gates. The design was later copied for the Giralda in Seville.
