The great Berber dynasty of the Almoravid was established way back in 1062, so it’s hardly surprising that little survives. But we’ve still got the Koubba Ba’adiyn, built in the early 1100s by Ali ben Youssef. The domed building shows Moroccan architecture in embryonic form, with keyhole arches, battlements with geometric chevrons and decorative carvings of pine cones, palms and acanthus. The interior of the dome has a mesmerising effect, with floral motifs in the form of an eight-point star.
