In the 19th century, the structural use of metal and glass gave an inkling of the shopping malls of the future. Designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (1865-77) features two arcades, joined by a huge domed roof in steel and glass, allowing for a whole new undercover shopping experience.
