Private Venetian houses from the 13th Century still survive, their fine facades facing the water, with arcades at ground-floor level and arched open galleries on the first floor. Gradually, the pure Byzantine arch developed a peak as Gothic style was introduced, with pointed ogee arches, trefoil and quatrefoil stonework designs favoured for windows. The Ca’d’oro (1425-1434), or "house of gold", was once decorated in gold leaf, ultramarine and vermillion, hugely expensive materials. It has elegant arches with fine tracery, finely carved ogee windows and oriental pinnacles.
