Venice shows off its abundant wealth and eastern connections at the Basilica di San Marco, 1063-94. The design is a five-domed Greek cross, and it is the third church to stand on the site. Over the centuries it’s been remodelled, with Gothic-style additions that sit strangely with its Byzantine design. It’s decked out with glorious glittering mosaics in marble and glass by Venetian master-craftsmen.
