Delusions of grandeur are on display in EUR (Esposizione Universale di Roma), a district of Rome. Its Fascist, or Rationalist architecture was conceived in the 1930s, by Marcello Piacentini, though various architects worked on the project. Much was never constructed as building was interrupted by World War II. Inspired by ancient Rome, it’s a severe style, on a grand scale. The Palazzo della Civilta del Lavoro, known as the square colosseum, has six stories of unremitting rows of arches.
