Getting off to an early start with the Roman Empire gave the Italians plenty of time to refine their style. In Rome the Colosseum, 70-80AD, is still standing, while other ancient Roman buildings still exist in a recycled form, their stone filched and applied to newer projects. Venice boasts some of the most beautiful buildings in Italy, thanks to its former position as an independent city state with a wide-reaching empire and fabulous wealth from trading.
