The neo-classsicists looked back to Greek design for inspiration. The Brandenburg Gate, built 1788-1791, by Carl Gotthard Langhans, was modelled on the Athenian Propylaea, the entrance to the Acropolis. Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s Elisabethkirche in Berlin (1832-34) is another fine example of the style.
