When the baroque hit southern Germany, the results were outstanding. Elaborate churches, monasteries and residences, influenced by the Palace of Versailles, were built in flamboyant style, and decorated with ceiling frescoes and elaborate stucco.
In 1719, Balthasar Neumann made a start on the Wurzburg Residenz, commissioned by the Prince Bishops Johann Philipp Franz and his brother Friedrick Karl von Schonborn. Other architects were also involved in the work - just as well, as it has more than 300 rooms, plus an impressive double staircase.
