It’s so wrong to typecast the Germans as stolid and dependable when their architecture says something else entirely. Elaborate Gothic churches were later joined by exuberant baroque palaces and the 19th century brought with it a spirit of romantic historicism that inspired Germans to remodel castles such as Burg Hohenzollern into mythical fantasies.
Recent buildings reflect international as well as local influences, and include the acclaimed Dresden Central Station, 1997, by Norman Foster, the Mercedes Benz Museum, in aluminium and glass, by UN Studio, 2006, and the 2007 Stirling prize-winning Museum of Modern Literature, Marbach am Neckar, 2006, David Chipperfield.
