Picturesque castles are to be found all over Germany, some in ruins, others remarkably well preserved, but the most romantic are those built in the 19th century.
This spell of historical romanticism resulted most spectacularly in Schloss Neuschwanstein, built 1869-86 for the Bavarian King Ludwig II. Ludwig wanted to attain the genuine style of the German knightly fortress. The design was the brainchild of theatre designer Christian Jank, who drew on a mix of styles to create this fantasy castle.
