The Belle Epoque heralded the arrival of Art Nouveau, from around 1890, its sinuous forms still on show at the Metro entrances, designed by Hector Guimard. But it was Jules Lavirotte who won first prize at the Concours des Facades de la Ville de Paris in 1901 for his design for 29 Avenue Rapp, which features art nouveau ceramics and brick work in the form of female figures, flowers and animals, on a sandstone base.
