If you want to see French baroque style, get along to Versailles. It started life as a hunting lodge, yet Versailles became the most spectacular palace in Europe, presided over by the court of Louis XIV. Work began in 1668 and the new buildings gradually extended outwards from the original one, with great wings eventually added. It was designed by architects Louis le Vau and Jules Hardouin-Mansart, with interiors by Charles Le Brun and formal gardens by Andre Le Notre. Louis XIV’s last addition was the Chapelle Royale.
