Renaissance architecture, imported from Italy, must have been a shock for anyone accustomed to pointy-Gothic. Francois I called on Italian architect Domenico da Cortona to build the Chateau de Chambord in the Loire valley in the latest style. Work began in 1519 on the castle, which has a central keep and four massive towers at the corners. Louis XIV was responsible for a later makeover on the royal apartments.
