Looming over the Seine is the massive bulk of Notre Dame Cathedral, a testament to Gothic style. Founded in 1163, it took a mind-boggling 170 years to construct. Key features of the style are pointed arches, ribbed vaulting and flying buttresses. The 90m spire was added when the building was restored (1861-1864) by Viollet-le-Duc.
