Grand schemes hold no fears for the French. They were first with Gothic style in the 12th century, which they followed up with elaborate palaces in Renaissance and Baroque styles, plus magnificent monuments such as the Arc de Triomphe, designed by Jean Francois Therese Chalgrin and built 1806 to 36.
And yes, they’re still at it, with the inventive, twinkly Pyramid entrance to the Musee du Louvre , by I M Pei (1989), the colossal hollow cube La Grande Arche in La Defense (1989) by the Danish architect Otto von Spreckelsen, and some breathtaking new skyscrapers.
