The Future Of Concrete

Environmental Implications
Although the manufacture of concrete necessitates carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere when Portland cement is produced, these emissions can be reduced by substituting fly ash – waste from coal-powered plants – for the cement.

But on other levels, concrete is more environmentally-friendly than you might think. As it is very dense, it absorbs and releases heat slowly, so is ideal for homes where solar power is being harnessed. Its durability means that buildings require very little maintenance, so valuable resources aren’t being used for repairs. And lightweight concrete blocks are now being produced which uses less raw material and have even better insulation properties.

Available as blocks or panels, it is suitable for external and internal walls and screens and is a great way of bringing light into a dark space.

And pre-cast concrete has moved into a new dimension with the introduction of an advanced, lightweight stain-resistant material, polished and sealed in the factory, ready to be installed quickly and easily at home. Large sheets can be used to clad walls, and bespoke heat and stain resistant worktops cast-shaped for the sink and hob, with draining grooves cut out. Its uses don’t end there – advanced cast concrete also produces uber-chic staircases, splashbacks and table tops.
