Make the most of home

Luxury at Home
Presenter: Naomi Cleaver

The property market is in a pretty gloomy state these days, with the credit crunch making it harder for people to secure mortgages and make offers. If you were planning to move house, you might well now be thinking twice about making the leap. In fact, lots of people are deciding to stay put for the moment – and we think it’s the ideal opportunity to make the best of the home you’ve already got and make the time in it you spend it as enjoyable as possible.

In an ideal world, home should be a place where you come and relax at the end of the day, but in reality we’re all so busy rushing around that it’s hard to switch off. There are some simple things you can do to make your home feel more peaceful. Why not set aside some time to de-clutter your space – it will instantly feel calmer. Take unloved items to charity shops – it’s very liberating! Once you’ve cleared some room, you could further instil an atmosphere of tranquillity by painting walls neutral colours and installing soothing up-lighting. Not forgetting the important finishing touches, such as candles, rugs, cushions and throws for a luxurious feel.

With your home setting the scene for some proper relaxation, you can make the most of its space and enjoy some relaxing activities. Set some time aside to have a long soak in the bath, or, instead of spending £40 on a professional spa treatment, you could treat yourself to a facial, manicure or pedicure at home. Or, instead of blowing £20 at the movies, you can turn your living room into a home cinema, get your mates round and cook up your own popcorn. There are loads of movies that you can download using broadband, and 4OD has a great selection. Staying in – it’s the new going out!
