Boxes. Packing tape. Acres of bubble wrap. And not forgetting a kettle to brew up a cuppa when you arrive.
Here are a few more things you'll need to keep in mind before the big day.
Before you move - the checklist
- Tell your boss - once you've finalised your moving date, make sure you book time off work
- Book the movers - get estimates from more than one firm; there's a list on the British Association of Removers website
- Have a clear out - if it's not going with you, recycle it, donate it or bin it
- Get protected - arrange buildings and contents insurance for moving day
- Tell your utility suppliers - contact your gas, electricity, water, phone and broadband company
- Tell everyone else - give your new address details to your bank, building society, DVLA, friends, relatives, credit card and store card companies, loan companies, pension companies, your employer, local council for council tax, TV licensing, insurance providers, doctor, dentist, magazine subscriptions and HM Customs and Revenue (if you're self-employed)
- Start packing - it's never too early
- Defrost your freezer - you don't want a soggy mess on moving day
- Clean the house - and check for anything you may have left behind
- Pack a survival kit - including kettle, mugs, teabags, biscuits, toilet roll
- Check the meters - take final gas and electricity readings before you move out and new readings when you move in
