Film 5 - Energy saving on the road

Vox Pops
I couldn’t leave my car at home.  I do need it for travelling around, not only that just you know rather than use London Transport.

Well I think the price of trains is just daylight robbery.

Now don’t get me wrong.  I do recognise the necessity of a car as much as the next person but when a quarter of the UK’s environmentally-damaging carbon dioxide emissions come from road transport, it’s about time we started making some concessions.  Even making small changes to the way we drive make real inroads into tackling climate change and you may even be able to save yourself £220 a year in fuel.  Here are some ideas to minimise the damage that’s being done.

Check your tyre pressure regularly.  Under-inflated tyres are dangerous and can increase fuel consumption.

Plan your journey to avoid congestion, road works and getting lost.

Drive off from cold.  Modern cars are designed to be driven off straight away.  Warming up the engine just wastes fuel.

Check your revs, change up between two thousand and two and a half thousand rpm.

Monitor your speed.  The most efficient speed is around forty-five to fifty miles per hour, depending on your car.  Faster speeds will greatly increase your fuel consumption.

Take your foot off the accelerator as early as possible.  This reduces the fuel flow to the engine to virtually zero.

Use air conditioning sparingly as it significantly increases fuel consumption.

Anticipate road conditions and drive smoothly avoiding sharp acceleration and heavy braking.  This saves fuel and reduces accident rates.

Of course one of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to leave your car at home.  Why not walk, cycle or even take public transport?  There are so many easy ways to reduce the amount of energy we use to get around.

It only takes a little effort to make a huge difference to the environment and ensure a healthier planet, not just for you but for your children and for generations to come.
