Prawn and crab timbale with avocado salsa recipe

Hazel aimed to impress with an elegant crab starter on Come Dine With Me East Cheshire

Serves 5


  • 16 raw peeled king prawns
  • ¼ tsp Chinese five spice
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 shallots, finely chopped
  • 450g white crab meat, excess water squeezed out
  • 2-3 tbsp good-quality mayonnaise

For the salsa

  • 2 mangos, diced
  • 3 avocados, diced
  • Juice of 4 limes
  • 1 red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small bunch coriander (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Chilli oil, to garnish


  1. Mix the prawns, five spice, oil, honey, chilli sauce, lemon juice and shallots in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate overnight to marinate.

  2. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Spread the prawn mixture on a baking tray and bake for 5 minutes. Cool completely then chop finely.

  3. Mix the prawns with the crab meat and mayonnaise and a squeeze of lime. Mix all the salsa ingredients together and serve with the timbales.

  4. Arrange the mixture in layers in a cooking ring. Carefully remove the ring, drizzle with chilli oil and garnish with lime.
