Pork and apple pie recipe

Rebecca Tyler made this combination all the more British by putting it into a pie on Come Dine With Me Bath

Serves 5

Ingredients

  • 450g bacon, cut into 4cm pieces
  • 3 medium onions, chopped
  • 1.35kg boneless pork, cut into 2cm cubes
  • 120g plain flour
  • Canola oil, optional
  • 3 medium tart apples, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tsp dried sage
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • 240ml apple cider
  • 120ml water

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 160°C/gas mark 2½. In an ovenproof pan fry the bacon until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Add the onion to the pan and fry until soft, then remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

  2. Dust the pork lightly with flour, then brown a third at a time in the pan, adding oil if needed. Remove from the heat and drain.

  3. To the pork, add the bacon, onions, apples, sage, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Stir in cider and water. Cover and bake for 2 hours or until pork is tender.
