Death by chocolate recipe

Sally Morgan aimed to dispatch a few of her guests with a seriously rich chocolate dessert on the Come Dine With Me Halloween Special

Serves 4


  • 200g milk chocolate
  • Small bowl filled with amaretto
  • Small bowl of crushed almonds
  • Chocolate ice cream, to serve

For the cake

  • 110g butter
  • 110g caster sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 110g self-raising flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder


  1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/gas mark 3. In a large bowl beat together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs a little at a time, then sieve in the flour and cocoa powder and gently fold together.

  2. Pour the mixture into a greased and lined cake tin and bake for 25 minutes until springy to the touch. Allow the cake to cool completely on a wire rack once cooked.

  3. While the cake is cooling, melt the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of just simmering water.

  4. Cut the cooled cake into cubes then soak each piece in amaretto. Roll in crushed almonds and place on a baking sheet. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the cake cubes then chill until firm.

  5. Place the cake cubes in the bottom of 4 sundae glasses and scoop the ice cream on top.
