Steak and ale pie recipe

Neil keeps it classic with a stodgy steak and ale pie on Come Dine With Me Wakefield

Serves 4-6


  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1.5kg beef cut into 4cm chunks
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 330ml ale
  • 900ml beef stock
  • 25g butter
  • 25g plain flour
  • 425g ready-rolled puff pastry
  • 1 egg, beaten


  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/gas mark 7. Heat the oil in a frying pan and brown the beef. Add the onion, garlic and ale and simmer until tender.

  2. Pour in the beef stock, butter and flour and stir until the sauce has thickened. Season to taste then place in a pie dish. Cover with puff pastry and brush with beaten egg.

  3. Bake for 30-40 minutes then serve with seasonal vegetables.
