Mulled wine spices recipe

Add some spice to a plain old bottle for a more thoughtful last minute gift

Makes enough for 1 bottle


  • ½ whole nutmeg (crack with a rolling pin)
  • 1 tsp cloves
  • ¼ star anise
  • 3 allspice berries
  • Small piece of orange rind
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 bottle good-quality red wine (merlot, zinfandel or cabernet sauvignon)


  1. Pack the small spices and orange rind into cling film then greaseproof paper. Seal with ribbon and tie on the cinnamon stick.

  2. Tie the parcel onto the chosen bottle and add a tag with these instructions:

“Tip the spices into a saucepan with the wine, 75g demerara sugar and 300ml water. Simmer very gently for 30 minutes or so then ladle into mugs and enjoy.”
