Catherine Gazzoli is the chief executive of Slow Food UK, an environmentally and socially focussed initiative committed to ensuring good, clean and fair food is a right for everyone.
Is the food industry a man's game?
It's only a man's game if we let it be. And we aren't letting that happen. We now have some extremely well respected female chefs, producers and food business entrepreneurs who are leading their in respective fields.
Have you experienced this attitude?
There are perceptions that a woman chief executive can't demonstrate, when needed, more male attributed characteristics in a leadership position like mine. People also gave me a hard time about throwing myself so much into getting the job done and being happy to give up everything else for a time. In a man, that would have been seen as expected.
What does being a woman bring to the job?
Women are great multi-taskers and you certainly need that skill with all the different aspects of my job. Women are also excellent at building relationships, during the last year I've visited every one of our groups in the UK and we have over 60.
Which female producers should we be watching right now?
Christine Coe from Glebe Farm is the new chair of the British Pig Association. She breeds rare breed Berkshire pigs. They have one of the largest herds of outdoor pedigree Berkshire pigs. She's a wonderful woman.
