HELP & ADVICE - What happens if…

HPI has a dedicated team of experienced agents to support and guide consumers through the used car buying process, and to verify and investigate data accuracy. After making the 4Car HPI Check you will receive an instant response detailing the status of the vehicle, but what happens if the vehicle registers a 'hit'?

  1. Stolen Vehicles
  2. Outstanding Finance
  3. Condition Alert
  4. Condition Inspected
  5. Vehicle Identity
  6. Security Watch
  7. Plate Transfer
  8. VIN Match

1.Stolen Vehicles

If the vehicle is identified against the Stolen Vehicles register, we advise you NOT to proceed with the purchase.

HPI will investigate with the police to find out the true status of the stolen record. If this is confirmed as correct, you are advised to contact your local police force.

2.Outstanding Finance

If an outstanding finance agreement is highlighted, HPI will provide the enquirer with details of the finance house involved and a reference number.

Customers are advised to contact the finance house directly to confirm the current status of the finance agreement.

A settlement can usually be agreed between the seller, the finance house and the purchaser.

3.Condition Alert

If a vehicle hits the Condition Alert Register it means that it has been deemed a total loss or 'write-off' by an insurance company. If the damage has occurred post 1996, HPI will provide the category of write-off (A, B, C, D, E- 'A' and 'B's must never reappear on the road whilst 'C' and 'D' categories may return to the road following proper repair and inspection).

If the total loss marker is as a result of a theft claim, HPI will investigate directly with the insurance company on your behalf.

4.Condition Inspected

This register provides details of 'written-off' vehicles that have been properly repaired and passed an independent, Thatcham approved structural examination.

HPI holds the details of the original inspection in most cases, and can provide a copy report for a fee.

5.Vehicle Identity

This provides confirmation of the vehicle's physical details as they were first recorded by the manufacturer.

If any detail does not match the car the customer will be advised to check the details against the V5. If the details are still incorrect, HPI will investigate for you through DVLA.

6.Security Watch

Security Watch is a register of vehicles that are at high risk of fraud or theft. If a vehicle is highlighted against this register, you are advised not to proceed with the purchase.

HPI will then pass your details to the individual or company who placed the security interest, who may contact you in order to obtain further information about the circumstances of the sale.

7.Plate Transfer

This indicates whether a vehicle has had a legitimate plate change since April 1990.

HPI will confirm every plate change and subsequent interest, and urges customers not to proceed with any purchase until the vehicle has been given the all clear under all its identities.

8.VIN Match

This confirms the unique VIN. Any mis-match may well highlight a possible 'ringer' or stolen vehicle.

The enquirer will be advised to double check the VIN on the vehicle and the V5. If there is a significant discrepancy, HPI will investigate and contact the police if necessary.
