At present the only centralised database on seriously damaged vehicles is run by the insurance industry. Vehicles run by fleets are often self-insured, and do not feature on this database. HPI is currently in discussions with leading salvage organisations and fleet operators to secure more data on badly damaged vehicles.
HPI supports the Government's introduction of Vehicle Identity Checks - to be applied to all vehicles being put back on the road after serious accident damage. However we are keen to ensure that all vehicles that should go through the test are actually subjected to it and the public can interpret the results.
The Government has signalled its desire to make the current voluntary system for recording mileages at sale and relicensing through DVLA into a compulsory system. HPI supports the capture of additional data but has concerns that the information will be of poor quality unless an emphasis is placed on the accuracy of what is provided.
