Spacious and attractive cabin, excellent seats and good general comfort make this an accomplished long distance car. Safety features and smooth engines are assets, too
Lesser five-cylinders lack urge, no version especially inspiring to drive, ride average even with Four-C damping option
Beginning to feel old, but remains an appealing long-distance cruiser. Good used buy.

Like all executive cars, the S80 isn't especially cheap to own, but the D5 diesels are the least wallet-damaging. The T6 and 2.9 are quite expensive to run. The six-cylinders are best avoided unless you lust after the T6's exceptional performance, which will cost you.
The S80 is comparable to its German rivals in terms of servicing costs. Insurance costs are a little lower than average, too.
The entry-level ticket to S80 ownership is lower than for most rivals, and its standard equipment levels are quite good, including electronic climate control, ABS, multiple airbags, a six-speaker CD, cruise control alloy wheels and wood interior trim inserts. The SE adds electric driver's seat controls, leather upholstery, an upgraded nine-speaker stereo and 17-inch alloys among other things. The ultimate trim, Executive, is a bit specialised, the rear seat shifted backwards a few millimetres to increase rear legroom. Very few are sold, which is no surprise in view of its high running costs.
