Price Range: £22,245 to £36,745
Comfortable ride, powerful yet quite economical, a good car for chauffeurs.
Engine not that quiet, wallowing of comfort chassis, slow-reacting auto gearbox, lacks flair, not as desirable as Volvo's estates.
Great to be driven in, not so great to drive.

The D5 diesels will hold their value better than the petrol models (especially the V8 or 2.5T) but that's not saying much. We Brits love Volvo's estates, but demand for large saloons like this is not strong, except perhaps amongst private-hire minicabbers.
Residual (resale) values won't compare with the German saloons in this class, the S80 returning just 40-45% of its original new price after three years. Given that it's not particularly cheap in the first place (though Volvo is promising a revised pricing strategy) it may not work out more affordable in the long run than a BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class or Audi A6, all of which are more exciting to drive, more refined, more sophisticated, and come with greater cachet despite Volvo's best efforts to move the S80 upmarket.
