Category: Compact MPV
Price Range: £16,225 to £17,945
Easy to drive, loads of safety kit, solid build, excellent suspension and handling, great for towing.
No character, no single 'must-have' or distinguishing feature, van-like looks.
The Touran is immensely competent, but not particularly thrilling; not a car to inspire passion, devotion, or even family fondness.

The Touran is Volkswagen's answer to the Vauxhall Zafira, Renault Scenic, Citroen Picasso and so on; a Golf-based compact MPV, it comes in five- or seven-seat form, and fits into Volkswagen's family range between the Golf Plus and the Caravelle.
It's very angular, plain and van-like to look at - a mild facelift in 2007 sees revised lights and bumpers. However, it's technically accomplished, with responsive, accurate handling, excellent stability and body control, and a smooth, quiet ride, even if it's not a very exciting drive. It also has little in the way of discernable personality.
2007 also sees the addition of an optional self-parking system called Park Assist, which allows the Touran to parallel park itself between two cars.
The engine line-up has been revised, with the FSI petrol engines being dropped in favour of VW's turbocharged and supercharged 1.4-litre TSI engine available with 138 or 168bhp - and available with VW's DSG gearbox. The regular 1.6-litre 101bhp petrol engine continues, as does the 1.9-litre diesel offered in 89bhp and 104bhp states of tune. Two 2.0-litre TDI diesels are also available with 138 or 168bhp - DSG is also available on these. Three trim levels are offered: S, SE and Sport.
