Plain but smart looks, well-equipped, good choice of engines and transmissions.
Rather ungainly boot design, noisy diesels.
An attractive compact saloon, but lacks image of 3-Series and so on - and the practicality of the Golf hatchback.

Those diesel engines can be a bit noisy on start-up and when pushed hard, but otherwise, the Jetta is very refined.
Ride quality suffers with the larger (optional) wheel/tyre combinations and optional sports suspension, but it generally rides smoothly and quietly, coping well with bumps and broken road surfaces.
There's good interior space, with generous rear legroom making this a proper mini-limo (as long as the front seats aren't pushed too far back) and the high roof and wide cabin give plenty of headroom, elbowroom and an airy atmosphere. The monochrome, minimalist cabin design is pleasant, too, with no over-fussy detailing, excessive instrumentation or jarring styling touches: most versions have a number of storage and stowage boxes, door pockets, cupholders and so on.
The deep boot is 72 litres larger than that of the Golf Mk4-based Bora, too - and it accommodates a proper full-sized spare wheel. The rear seats fold forward should you need to carry longer loads.
