Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion (2008-) Review

Category: Small Family 3 out of 5

Summary of the Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion (2008-)

Price Range: £20,815 to £25,345

Assets

Incredible fuel economy, sub-120g/km emissions, good drive.

Drawbacks

Hefty £520 premium, firm ride, overly long gearing, noisy diesel.

Verdict

Standard diesel Ford Focus achieves the same eco gains without the ride, handling and pricing compromise.

Volkswagen Golf Review

Comfort and Equipment3 out of 5

The Bluemotion is available in both standard 'S' specification and Bluemotion Match.

Both cost around £520 more than the equivalent Golf with the same 103bhp 1.9-litre diesel under the bonnet. The extra costs, VW says, is down to the Bluemotion's standard particulate filter that the standard car lacks. This accounts for £420 of the price hike.

Equipment isn't generous for a car where prices start at £15,000. At least you get aircon, ESP and six airbags, but door handles, rub strips and exterior wing mirrors all remain unpainted - they are just finished in black plastic.

Paying £680 more for the Match adds cruise control and a leather wrapped steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever.
