Insurance is group 10 for the 2.0, but a bit pricier, at 14, for the 1.8T and V5. Servicing is required every 10,000 miles. Fuel economy is potentially very good in the four-cylinder cars, but less impressive in the V5; the diesels provide high speed and economy, so are the most cost-effective all round.

For excitement-per-pound, these Golfs disappoint. Your money goes instead on the quality and the pleasure that comes from owning an iconic object.
