They ooze quality and Golf iconography.
Unexciting to drive.
Good cars, but Volkswagen lost the GTI plot.

For all the criticisms that the GTI isn't a proper GTI any more, and despite the fact that the Golf is now dated and dull compared to many rivals, these cars are still immensely sought-after on the secondhand market, especially in diesel form. Don't expect any bargains, and VW dealers are likely to want high premiums. Best to seek out well cared-for cars from private sellers, or, if you don't need the hatchback practicality, consider the high-performance versions of the Bora saloon, which come up cheaper, model-for-model.
The diesels hold their value the best, though residual values are very strong for all GTi models.
