Volkswagen has been building estate versions of its Golf hatchback since 1993 and, with 1.2m sold to date, the company has high hopes for this, its third iteration.

Launched with three engines - 1.6-litre petrol and 1.9 and 2.0-litre diesel - and three trim levels - S, SE and Sport Wagon - there will be enough options for all potential buyers, although VW estimates that a third of buyers will go for the basic S trim level in combination with the 1.9-litre diesel engine.
