Room, ride, handling and decent engines, making it good to drive and ride in. It's cheap to run, and provides good crash protection.
Dull interiors are a major flaw, it lacks individuality and looks boring besides more modern, striking rivals. A little pricey, considering some stingy standard specs.
Sensible, yet enjoyable to drive. If only it looked less dull, inside and out.

The Astra's engines not only perform well, but combine this with good fuel consumption too. 1.7-litre diesels are particularly good for economy; 59mpg in a car of this size is excellent. High-mileage buyers can opt for the Dualfuel (LPG-petrol) models, which cost less to refuel (LPG is taxed at half the rate of normal unleaded) and are exempt from London congestion charging.
Insurance costs are very competitive, servicing costs particularly so, though depreciation will probably hurt come trade-in time.
