Room, ride, handling and decent engines, making it good to drive and ride in. It's cheap to run, and provides good crash protection.
Dull interiors are a major flaw, it lacks individuality and looks boring besides more modern, striking rivals. A little pricey, considering some stingy standard specs.
Sensible, yet enjoyable to drive. If only it looked less dull, inside and out.

The Astra has performed respectably in the NCAP crash tests, scoring four stars, though its protection of pedestrians is poor.
It is better thief-proofed than average, although deadlocks are optional on the cheapest models, and alarms an extra on most. ABS anti-lock brakes are not offered as standard, however - these are a safety must-have - and only the top-spec models have side airbags. More modern rivals are better-equipped with safety kit.
