Vauxhall Astra SRi/GSi (1999-) Review

Category: Hot Hatchbacks 3.5 out of 5

Summary of the Vauxhall Astra SRi/GSi (1999-)

Price Range: £15,405 to £22,000

Assets

Good performance, smooth engines, comfortable over distance

Drawbacks

Not the most engaging hot hatches, indifferent residual values

Verdict

Surprisingly good hot-hatch serves up good performance, if not outright thrills

Vauxhall Astra Review

Running Costs3.5 out of 5

Should prove pretty reasonable. The 1.8 SRi returns 37mpg, the 2.2 SRi almost 35mpg, with the GSi Turbo, despite its 197bhp, giving 32mpg on the combined cycle, not bad for a performance-geared petrol hatch.

Insurance groups, although high-ish, aren't outrageous: the 1.8 and 2.2 SRi come in at Group 9 and 13 respectively, and the GSi at Group 15.

Both SRi and GSi models come well equipped at this price. All models have air conditioning, ABS anti-lock brakes, twin airbags, electric windows and mirrors, CD player, cruise control, alloys and alarm. Options are limited: leather's expensive (GSi only), as is the (fairly pointless) electric sunroof. Sat-nav is about a grand and metallic paint is around three hundred quid.
