Vauxhall Astra Review

On the road4 out of 5

Hot they may be, but difficult they're not. The seats are very adjustable and comfortable, there's a reach- and rake-adjustable steering wheel, good forward visibility and easily modulated controls.

The SRi comes in three- and five-door bodystyles: the five-door has better rear visibility than the three-door model but otherwise has few shortcomings in this area.

Because it isn't as outwardly exciting as most of its rivals, the Astra is often overlooked. SRi differences from the rest of the Astra range include 20mm lowered suspension and stiffer springs. Though not a great driver's car, it does serve up a modicum of entertainment; cornering flatly and with good levels of grip. The steering is nicely weighted and direct, if not offering the most feedback in this class, while the willing engines and positive gearshift also help its score. It's not a car that urges you to take it by the scruff and thrash it, but it's enjoyable to drive briskly and smoothly.

The GSi (and limited edition SRi Turbo) are better again, incorporating elements of the Turbo Coupe's suspension. Grip and agility are improved, with little loss of ride comfort.

Few complaints for performance - Vauxhall's four-cylinder petrol engines are traditionally smooth and willing, and these are no exception. The 1.8 SRi is fairly sparky, its 125bhp punts it to 60mph in 8.5 seconds and on to 127mph. The 147bhp 2.2 SRi has a stronger engine still, with plenty of urge throughout the rev-range. It hits the 60mph benchmark in 8.2 seconds (but feels noticeably quicker than the 1.8) and goes on to 133mph.

Thanks to extra noise-deadening, the 2.2 sounds a lot nicer in the Astra than when used in the VX220; crisp and eager rather than raucous and rattly. The GSi is a faster proposition still. It has 197bhp, does 150mph and posts 0-60mph in seven seconds.
