Toyota iQ3 (2009-) Review

Category: City Cars 3 out of 5

Summary of the Toyota iQ3 (2009-)

Price Range: £10,495 to £11,615

Assets

Clever packaging; a more flexible engine; premium feel.

Drawbacks

Noisy engine; too expensive; tries too hard to be something it's not.

Verdict

Although the 98bhp engine adds cruising ability, Toyota's city car doesn't need it when you consider the higher purchase price and greater running costs.

Toyota iQ Review

Running Costs4 out of 5

While the 1,333cc version of the iQ is very economical relative to other small cars on the market, it isn't as frugal the three-cylinder version.

It will return close to 60mpg (excellent, but seven mpg less than the 1.0-litre), which means CO2 emissions of 113g/km. Although that puts this iQ in Band C for road tax - which means it will cost owners just £35 a year - it doesn't benefit from the same road tax exemption as the 'standard' models.

This is still an impressively frugal and very cheap car to run but that doesn't change the fact that Toyota wants an extra £1,000 for a version of the iQ that's slightly heavier on fuel, costs more each year to run and has a smaller range than the entry-level model.

Company car users will pay the lowest 10% tax rating, though, and it won't cost much to insure.
