Indestructible mechanicals, huge space, tough image, a leading power figure with the 169bhp three-litre.
Too big for some, not that clever inside, low max towing weight, cheap plastics.
For some a pick-up is a Hilux and, for them, the new model won't disappoint. But Nissan and Mitsubishi have a better trucks and a smarter approach to selling them.

The Hilux isn't really geared up for the rigours of modern-day crash tests. That's not to say it wouldn't isolate the crash from the cabin, just that with only two airbags it's not going to impress testers used to seeing six or more in most SUVs. There's not even a three-point seatbelt for the central passenger in the rear.
Security-wise, there's an alarm and remote central locking as standard-fit on most models, though, which is good. What you don't get is a locking rear tailgate - important for securing a load when you've got a hardtop or tonneau.
