Indestructible mechanicals, huge space, tough image, a leading power figure with the 169bhp three-litre.
Too big for some, not that clever inside, low max towing weight, cheap plastics.
For some a pick-up is a Hilux and, for them, the new model won't disappoint. But Nissan and Mitsubishi have a better trucks and a smarter approach to selling them.





Toyota has always made reliable vehicles and the no-nonsense Hilux has gained a reputation for being virtually indestructible.
That was dramatically proven when Top Gear famously tried (and failed) to kill an 80s Hilux, even collapsing a multi-story building under it.
The D-4D diesel engine is well proven - the 3.0-litre also goes into the Land Cruiser - and there's nothing too new-fangled or fancy here to go wrong.
It's all underpinned by a three-year, 60,000-mile mechanical warranty, three years/60,000 miles paint and surface corrosion cover (one year for the load bed) and six years/unlimited mileage anti-corrosion cover (one year for the load bed).
However, the superficial fit and finish is a bit cheap: the cabin, although better than before, lacks the quality feel of the Navara's or L200's, with flimsy grey plastics making up the otherwise very car-like dash.
