Roomy, sturdy hatchback with good ride quality.
Steering lacks feel, some of the engines struggle.
It may lack sparkle, but this is a well thought-through car you can rely on to do the job.

The Auris is priced to compete directly with the likes of the Honda Civic and Peugeot 307, rather than the VW Golf, and Toyota is keen to stress that it's not in the business of offering big discounts or other incentives. The experts at CAP predict residual values up there at the top of the class along with the Civic - the Toyota slightly ahead in the case of the 2.0 diesel and slightly behind for the 1.6 petrol, at around 40% of the original price after three years/60,000 miles.
The Auris falls into low insurance groups, and the car has been designed in such a way that service and repair work should not take long, thus keeping garage bills down.
The 1.6 petrol has a combined fuel consumption figure of 39.8mpg, which is pretty impressive for a high-revving petrol four, but it's walloped by the 2.0-litre diesel's 52.3mpg. The diesel produces lower carbon dioxide emissions too: 151g/km, versus the VVT-i unit's 166.
Cleanest engine of the lot is the 1.4-litre diesel with the MultiMode transmission: it does 56.5mpg and emits 131g/km, but then again it takes 14.7sec to amble to 62mph.
