Tesla Roadster Review

Running Costs4 out of 5

Annual maintenance is barely a factor when calculating the Roadster's running costs. Thanks to regenerative braking the Roadster is said to be very light on its brake pads, since the car slows rapidly as soon as you lift off the brake pedal. Tyre wear on the other hand might be, depending on how hard you drive the Tesla.

Replacing the batteries will be the costliest bill you'll ever face and it's likely to run into five figures. However, the cost may be substantially less than that once battery performance eventually begins to drop off.

Charge the Tesla from your home domestic electricity supply and the Roadster will take a tedious 16 hours for a full charge, but most will convert their supply to a more powerful 62-amp supply that reduces the full charge to four hours. The cost and how green the source of electricity depends on your supply. Wealthy customers in the US have fitted wind turbines and solar panels so they don't have to rely on fossil-fuel-burning power sources.
