Fine handling; five-star Euro NCAP score; good ride; DSG option; Ecomotive version on the way
Noisy and unrefined engines; iffy quality; sense of cost-cutting
Nice chassis, good safety, shame about the engines. Disappointing.

The Ibiza's basically comfortable, but that cabin does feel dated, and the ambience is ruined by the harsh, noisy engines. There was also intrusive wind noise in some of the cars tested, as well as unidentified whines, rattles and intermittent squeaks which could drive you mad. Shame: the Ibiza actually rides rather well, even with the lowered Sport suspension, the driving position is good and the cabin roomy, with decent legroom for rear-seat passengers, plenty of headroom and a usefully-sized boot. No clever flat-folding/sliding/tumbling rear seats, but the bench does fold forwards to extend the load-bay, and there is an external boot release - some rivals have only a remote lever/key fob blipper.
Standard equipment includes electric front windows, remote central locking and an MP3-compatible CD player, though entry-level versions don't get air conditioning, fog lights or alloy wheels.
Options available include under-seat drawers, parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, panoramic glass sunroof, tinted glass, heated washer/headlamp jets, bi-xenon headlights, a mounting unit for a TomTom sat nav (no integrated in-dash systems available), front armrest, heated front seats and Bluetooth phone compatibility.
