Cheeky but sophisticated design, clever cabin storage, light weight for good economy, refined engine, fun to drive, good ride.
Plasticky interior surfaces, steering could be more precise, cabin storage lacks non-slip mats, no side airbags in entry-level model.
Light, nimble, good looking and cleverly thought-out: exactly what a modern supermini should be.

Mazdas are reliable. Fact. There's no reason to suppose the 2 will be any different, especially as it's designed to be a simple, inexpensive car. As for quality, it's accurately assembled out of precisely designed components, and the crease lines along the flanks are particularly crisply pressed. The bodyshell feels very rigid and the test cars were entirely devoid of rattles, buzzes and resonances.
The downside is the expanse of hard plastic in the cabin, especially when the Renault Clio and the Peugeot 207 give you a padded dashboard. Mazda's Geneva show car had a soft skin on the dashboard and entire door panels, which gave it an unexpectedly upmarket feel. Sadly the soft-touch surfaces, created for the show car's prototype panels, haven't made it to production.
