Overview3 out of 5

The Getz is Hyundai's best-selling car in both the UK and Europe, with over 15,000 sold in 2004. It's Hyundai's first supermini since the Pony (the car that introduced Hyundai to UK buyers) and has been developed specifically with European buyers in mind, without losing sight of its core Korean values of efficiency, reliability and competitive pricing. It is intended to undercut most of the mainstream European superminis - Fiesta, C3, 206, Clio, Corsa and so on.

The Getz follows the current supermini trends in having a high roof and versatile, one-box interior - it's practically a mini-MPV, without looking as outlandish as, say, the Suzuki Wagon R+, or indeed, Hyundai's own Atoz.

It might not have the best quality cabin, the most advanced of gadgets, the most cleverly designed architecture or the most fashionable appearance, but it's a practical and accomplished little runaround that should suit single buyers and small families alike.

Offered in three- and five-door form, it comes with 1.1-litre and 1.4-litre petrol plus two 1.5-litre diesel engines. A mild facelift in 2005 brought with it new headlights, revisions to the interior and refinements to its engine range. At its original launch in 2002, the Getz was also available with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines.
