Space, flat-four engines, reliability, driver enjoyment.
Anonymous-to-ugly styling, low ground clearance for off-roading.
The Legacy might be too bland for some, but it's an equally impressive all-rounder for executive motorway cruising or family load-lugging. Very able.

Though perfectly practical, the interior of the Legacy is a let-down compared to the competition, its chunky style lacking flair. But sound insulation and ride quality has been much improved over the original Legacies. Air conditioning is available but it's an expensive option; leather upholstery is also a pricey option on some models. The saloon is very spacious, and the estate is simply huge inside. The boot is huge on both, and the load space is well-designed. Plenty of leg-room in the back, and the cabin feels airy despite its dark materials. Oddments stowage is good. Sound quality on the radio/cassette is well up to scratch, but there's no standard CD player - what an oversight in this class! RDS traffic information systems are also available.
