Space, flat-four engines, reliability, driver enjoyment.
Anonymous-to-ugly styling, low ground clearance for off-roading.
The Legacy might be too bland for some, but it's an equally impressive all-rounder for executive motorway cruising or family load-lugging. Very able.

Fuel consumption is the biggest drawback on the 2.5 models, though it's not too bad viewed in the context of its power and equivalent rivals. Like all big Japanese cars, depreciation is quite high, but the Legacy has always been in demand on the secondhand market, particularly the well-specified Outback estates, despite a lack of mainstream appeal. The Legacy is an appealing all-round package, and that reliability and durability are well worth the competitive prices, even though the Outback is far away from bargain territory. And equipment levels are far from generous when it comes to air conditioning and other such items. But then a Legacy will run and run for years. What price total dependability?
